The Skiing

Flachau lies at one end of a 3 valley linked network with Wagrain in the central valley and Alpendorf/St Johann at the far end.

Just up the road is Flachauwinkl which is at the centre of another 3 valley network with Zauchensee to the left and Klienarl to the right.

These 2 areas have a total of 260km of skiing which is a sizable area, with 9 modern gondolas and 20 high speed 6 man chairlifts this is one of the most advanced lift systems in the world. The skiing is from 800m to 2200m. Flachau has a vertical drop of 1000m, more than any American resort!

If you purchase the Ski Armade lift pass, this covers you for a massive 865km of skiing and 276 lifts.

There are three village access points up the mountain. The local area has high speed detachable 6 & 8 seater chairlifts and modern gondolas. Nearly all the chairs have seat heating and bubbles.

The skiing is mainly suited to intermediate skiers with 60% of the slopes graded red.

Wagrain Wagrain is in the next valley from Flachau. If you take the chairs to the top at Griessenkareck you can ski down to Wagrain. There is also a really good run down to Moadorfl and a fast gondola back up. From Wagrain you can get the Grafenberg gondola which leads to lifts and runs that eventually link to Alpendorf, an area that's 15km from end to end.

Flachauwinkl Flachauwinkl is up the road in the same valley as Flachau. From here a series of modern lifts take you to Mooskopf and then on to runs down to the resort of Kleinarl. On the otherside a new gondola and chair take you over to Zauchensee. The run back is a fantastic red run which was to be a mens downhill coarse and don't miss the Bergstall Hutte - very old.

Zauchensee Zauchensee is at the head of the valley up the road from Altenmarkt, a small town with it's own small ski area linked to Radstat. The women's downhill and super 'g' course is here and a couple of ski routes away from the lifts. There are also some easier blues and reds. Zauchensee is pretty and worth having lunch there.

Alpendorf Alpendorf is a small hamlet of St Johann im Pongau that is linked to the skiing of Wagrain via various modern lifts. There are some black runs in this area for something more challenging.
